Kenya Army Receives Eight Refurbished MD 500 Helicopters Donated by South Korea
The Kenya Army Corps of Aviation took over eight refurbished MD 500 Defender helicopters donated by South Korea at its headquarters in Embakasi, Nairobi, on Friday 23 October 2026. Kenya’s Ministry of Defence said the United States fitted the aircraft with advanced digital systems and trained Kenyan pilots and technicians.
What was handed over
Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya presided over the reception, the Ministry of Defence said. She said the helicopters would add to the Kenya Defence Forces’ capacity for reconnaissance, aerial support, mobility and security operations. The Chief of the Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, listed counter-terrorism, peace support operations and humanitarian assistance as the intended roles.
The Kenyan statement does not give a number of aircraft. South Korea’s defence ministry put it at eight decommissioned MD 500 Defenders, Yonhap news agency reported. According to Seoul, the helicopters were shipped to the United States in late 2023 for about two years of maintenance and repair, arrived in Kenya in September and have completed their flight tests. They are now awaiting deployment.
No value has been published for the transfer. This was a donation, not a purchase. In her post on X, Tuya said the aircraft were “acquired through our valued partnership” with South Korea and the United States.
A peacekeeping pledge from 2021
Seoul presents the transfer as fulfilling a pledge it made at the 2021 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in Seoul to provide helicopters for UN peacekeeping in Africa. Washington agreed to overhaul the aircraft and help transport them. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, thanked South Korea for “donating eight helicopters to enhance U.N. Peacekeeping’s air mobility”, The Korea Times reported.
The Kenyan statement does not say whether the helicopters will be assigned to a UN mission or kept for national operations. Officials from all three countries attended the ceremony. They included South Korea’s ambassador Kang Hyung-shik, US chargé d’affaires Susan Burns and Brigadier General Jayson Becker, deputy commanding officer of Combined Joint Task Force–Horn of Africa.
The MD 500 in Kenyan service
The Kenya Army has flown Hughes/MD 500-family scout helicopters for decades. Its most recent new-build additions were six MD 530F Cayuse Warriors bought through US Foreign Military Sales and commissioned at Embakasi in January 2020, as DefenceMENA explained in why Kenya bought the MD 530F. Of up to 12 MD 530Fs approved by Washington in 2017, only those six have been publicly contracted. Neither Nairobi nor Seoul has said how the ex-Korean airframes will be split between training, scouting and armed roles.
Regional context
Kenyan forces have been deployed in Somalia since 2011, where light helicopters are used for convoy escort and reconnaissance, and the army also patrols the long border with Somalia. Janes also reported the induction of the surplus South Korean helicopters.
