Nigeria Clears Lakurawa Enclave in Waria Forest, Sokoto: What the Army Says
Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma overrun a Lakurawa terrorist enclave in Waria Forest, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, on Thursday 15 October 2026, according to a statement by the operation’s Media Information Officer, Lt Col Aliyu Danja, reported by Vanguard and other Nigerian outlets. The army says Sector 2 forces destroyed camps and life-support structures, recovered weapons and five motorcycles, and neutralised several fighters after a firefight. No exact kill count was given in the Vanguard report of Danja’s statement.

What the military said
- Operation: Joint Task Force North West / Operation Fansan Yamma clearance mission on 15 October 2026 aimed at dismantling terrorist hideouts and denying freedom of movement (Danja statement via Vanguard).
- Axis of advance: Sector 2 troops advanced through identified enclaves around Alela, Bilange and Kandam villages toward Waria Forest, where they made contact with Lakurawa fighters.
- Engagement: After a gun battle, troops said they overpowered the fighters with superior firepower; the group abandoned positions and fled deeper into the forest. Troops pursued and, in Danja’s words as reported by Vanguard, “neutralised some of them.”
- Exploitation: Camps and life-support structures destroyed; weapons and five motorcycles recovered. The statement did not publish a named weapons inventory or a body count in the Vanguard account.
- Follow-on: Troops maintained a presence and continued clearance to deny freedom of action and improve security in surrounding communities. The Theatre Command urged the public to pass timely information on suspicious movements.
What is not confirmed
- Exact number killed: Danja’s statement, as carried by Vanguard, speaks of “several” / “some” fighters neutralised. Do not treat secondary headlines that invent a precise death toll as official figures.
- Independent verification: The account rests on the military statement. No separate UN, AFP or state-government casualty audit is cited in the same reports.
Who are Lakurawa?
Lakurawa is an armed group that Nigerian security reporting has linked to banditry and jihadist-style activity along the Nigeria–Niger border belt in Sokoto and neighbouring states. The 15 October operation is a Nigerian Army claim of clearing one forest enclave; it does not by itself prove the group has been destroyed across the north-west.

What to watch
- Whether Operation Fansan Yamma publishes a fuller after-action list (weapons types, detainee numbers, community returns).
- Follow-up clearance in Tangaza and adjoining LGAs if Lakurawa fighters regroup deeper in the forest belt.
- Civilian impact reporting from Tangaza — not covered in the military statement summarised here.
