Nigerian Air Force pilot salary follows the rank-based Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS), with allowances added for operational and special duties. A presidential pay rise of 30% to 80% took effect on 1 September 2026, but the Presidency has not published a rank-by-rank table and the Air Force has not published pilot allowance rates. This guide separates what is official from what is a press estimate. The percentage bands, the wage bill and the entry rules are official or documented; most naira figures for individual ranks are reported, not confirmed. It also covers how a pilot is trained, promoted and recruited.

How Nigerian Air Force Pilot Salary Is Structured

Pay in the armed forces is set by rank on CONAFSS, which applies to the Army, Navy and Air Force alike. A 2016 report on the structure, carried by ThisDay, paired equivalent ranks across the three services, so a Pilot Officer sits on the same grade as an Army Second Lieutenant. No source reviewed shows a separate base scale for pilots.

The structure has been revised since then. CONAFSS was included in the adjustment that followed the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which raised the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 from 29 July 2024, according to TheCable. The latest increase builds on that revision.

What the Latest Pay Rise Changed

President Bola Tinubu approved the increase in a State House statement dated 4 August 2026. It applies from 1 September to about 250,000 personnel and raises the yearly armed forces salary bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion. The statement gives percentages by rank band and no naira amounts.

It also names only Army ranks. The Air Force equivalents in the table below follow standard rank parity and are not stated by the Presidency.

Rise Ranks in the statement Air Force equivalent (by parity)
80% Private to Staff Sergeant Aircraftman to Flight Sergeant
50% Colonel down to Warrant Officer Group Captain down to Warrant Officer, which includes Pilot Officer to Wing Commander
30% Brigadier-General and above Air Commodore and above

On that reading, a newly winged Flying Officer falls in the 50% band. The Presidency has not confirmed the mapping, and the rise applies to a base figure that has itself not been published for officers below the rank of major.

Salary Table by Rank: What Is Reported

The only current naira figures come from documents seen by Leadership newspaper, reproduced by AllAfrica. They are approximate, and military sources told the paper that exact figures would be clear only when implementation details are released. No Pilot Officer, Flying Officer or Flight Lieutenant figure was reported.

Army rank Air Force equivalent Monthly before Monthly after (approx.)
Private Aircraftman About ₦104,000 About ₦187,000
Lance Corporal Lance Corporal ₦112,000 About ₦211,000
Sergeant Sergeant ₦120,000 to ₦130,000 ₦216,000 and above
Major Squadron Leader About ₦360,000 About ₦540,000

For officer grades closer to a pilot’s first years, the last published table is the 2016 CONAFSS report. It lists annual take-home pay, excluding allowances, and it predates both the 2024 revision and the latest rise, so it shows the shape of the scale rather than current pay.

Rank Annual take-home, 2016 report
Pilot Officer ₦2,245,909
Flying Officer ₦2,620,801
Flight Lieutenant ₦2,789,818
Air Vice-Marshal ₦16,516,124
Air Chief Marshal ₦20,691,400

Some online salary guides print current figures for junior officers. Those reviewed derive them from percentage uplifts applied to unsourced base figures, so they are not repeated here. Readers needing a payroll number should wait for the implementation details. The Army side of the same question is covered in our guide to Nigerian Army pay.

Allowances and Additional Benefits

The 2016 report states that its take-home figures exclude allowances for special assignments, military operations, foreign missions, duty tours and estacode, the federal foreign-travel allowance. It gave no amounts. Legit.ng makes the same point without rates, noting that special benefits go to officers on special assignments, operations or duty tours.

Allowance Documented Published rate
Special assignments Yes None found
Military operations Yes None found
Foreign missions and estacode Yes None found
Duty tours Yes None found
Flying or aircrew allowance Mentioned by salary guides only None found

The flying allowance is the item that would separate the Nigerian Air Force pilot salary from that of a ground officer of the same rank. Salary guides say it exists, but no official rate was found, so total pilot pay cannot be stated precisely.

How Pay Compares With the Minimum Wage

Defence Minister Christopher Musa said in July that the lowest-paid personnel earned ₦100,000 a month, up from ₦49,000, as reported by ICIR. The Nigeria Labour Congress welcomed the rise but said some junior personnel reportedly do not receive the national minimum wage.

Against the ₦70,000 minimum wage, the reported post-rise private’s pay of about ₦187,000 is roughly 2.7 times higher, and the reported major’s ₦540,000 about 7.7 times. A simple division of the new ₦924 billion wage bill by 250,000 personnel gives about ₦3.7 million a year each, but that is an arithmetic figure covering all costs, not an average salary.

Career Path and Promotion

Pilots are officers, and the Air Force trains them at 401 Flying Training School in Kaduna. In September 2020, 29 student pilots from the 66 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy graduated there. They had begun as flight cadets in January 2019, and the course opened with a 16-week ground phase before flying on the Diamond 40 and Super Mushshak (Nigerian Air Force). The Chief of the Air Staff said they still had to earn their wings in the next phase.

In May 2025, 35 officers received wings at Kaduna, 10 from the Basic Transport Flying Course and 25 from the Ab-initio Student Pilot Course. The Chief of the Air Staff said the school had trained more than 700 pilots for Nigeria and for Benin, Cape Verde, Niger, Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone (PR Nigeria). Fleet changes will shape later postings, as in the M-346FA delivery and pilot training timeline and the Air Force’s list of expected aircraft.

The officer ladder runs from Pilot Officer through Flying Officer, Flight Lieutenant, Squadron Leader, Wing Commander and Group Captain to Air Commodore, Air Vice-Marshal, Air Marshal and Air Chief Marshal. The Air Force has not published promotion timelines. For how the service compares with its neighbours, see Africa’s strongest air forces.

Requirements and How to Apply

The Air Force advertises officer entry through the Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC). The notice for DSSC 34 ran from 27 August to 7 October 2025. It asked for Nigerian citizenship by birth, age 20 to 32 (up to 40 for doctors), a degree at Second Class Lower Division or an HND at Lower Credit, five SSCE credits including English and Mathematics, and NYSC discharge or exemption. Minimum height was 1.68 m for men and 1.63 m for women (Nairametrics).

Requirements change between intakes. The DSSC 33 notice a year earlier set the age at 20 to 30 and asked for a Second Class Upper degree. Applications are free and made on nafrecruitment.airforce.mil.ng, followed by an aptitude test and interviews. Neither notice reviewed lists pilot as a stream, so candidates should read the current notice, and regular course cadets enter through the Nigerian Defence Academy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the Nigerian Air Force pilot salary per month?

No official monthly figure for pilots exists. Pay follows rank, and the reported post-rise figure for a major-equivalent Squadron Leader is about ₦540,000. Junior officer figures have not been reported, and the flying allowance rate is unpublished, so any single number for a pilot is an estimate.

When did the latest military pay rise take effect?

The rise took effect on 1 September 2026, following a State House statement dated 4 August 2026. It raises pay by 80% for private to staff sergeant, 50% for colonel down to warrant officer and 30% above colonel. The Presidency did not publish new rank-by-rank naira amounts or Air Force equivalents.

Do pilots earn more than other Air Force officers?

Published salary structures list pay by rank, not by trade, so base pay appears to be the same for pilots and ground officers of equal rank. Salary guides say aircrew receive a flying allowance on top, but no official rate has been released, so the size of any difference is not known.

How do you become a Nigerian Air Force pilot?

Pilots are trained as officers, with student pilots flying at 401 Flying Training School in Kaduna after a ground phase. Entry is through the Nigerian Defence Academy regular course or an advertised commission. The notices reviewed did not name a pilot stream, so applicants should check the current notice on the recruitment portal.
