Nigerian troops of Operation Hadin Kai say they repelled a coordinated Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attack on Forward Operating Base Garaha in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State on the night of Monday 12 October 2026, killing six fighters and recovering rifles, a machine gun and a mortar bomb. The account comes from an official military statement. Local officials give a slightly different body count and say a civilian was killed in a nearby village as the attackers withdrew. Here is what is confirmed, what differs between sources, and how the clash fits recent northeast fighting.

What the military said

Captain Mohammed Goni, acting military information officer at Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, said troops of Sector 4 successfully repelled the assault. His statement was carried by Daily Trust, National Accord, 9News Nigeria and other Nigerian outlets on 13 October.

According to the statement:

  • Insurgents advanced on foot from the Lar axis and launched the attack at about 9:07 p.m., attempting to overrun FOB Garaha.
  • Troops “responded with superior firepower and tactical coordination”, forced the attackers to retreat, and later found six terrorist corpses in the area.
  • Recovered weapons included one PKT machine gun with three ammunition belts (67 rounds), six AK-47 rifles, 11 AK-47 magazines, 157 rounds of 7.62 mm NATO ammunition, 120 rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition, and one 60 mm mortar bomb.
  • Other items recovered: an Infinix Android phone, a Canon portable video recorder, three camelback water bags, a magazine carrier and assorted clothing.
  • Troops sustained casualties; wounded personnel were receiving medical attention and arrangements were being made for evacuation.

The statement does not give the number of wounded soldiers, the size of the attacking force, or whether any fighters were captured. It does not name a specific ISWAP or Boko Haram unit.

What local officials added

Hong Local Government Area chairman Dr Aliyu Yerima Sa’ad Hong, quoted by Daily Trust, said the insurgents also tried to destroy a telecommunications mast hosting military surveillance cameras between about 8:30 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. He said forest guards and local hunters supported the defence, that no civilian was killed in Garaha itself, that two shops were burnt, and that two military personnel sustained gunshot wounds.

On bodies, the chairman said “a lot of them were killed, though they evacuated some of the corpses” and that “at the moment, four of their corpses were recovered” — a lower on-site figure than the military’s six. He also said the retreating fighters killed a civilian and burnt houses in Lar village. Those local claims have not been separately confirmed by the military statement.

Some early security-source reports, including coverage citing Zagazola Makama, initially spoke of four bodies found and five soldiers wounded. The official Operation Hadin Kai statement is the clearest military version: six dead fighters and an unspecified number of troop casualties.

Why Garaha matters

Garaha sits in the mountainous part of Hong LGA, close to routes linked to the Sambisa Forest belt in neighbouring Borno State. Daily Trust noted the town had also been attacked on 1 October 2026. The clash comes two days after the military said an air strike at Badu, south of Gudumbali in Borno, killed more than 40 ISWAP fighters — a claim covered separately in Nigeria Says Air Strike Killed 40 ISWAP Fighters at Badu, Borno: What Is Confirmed.

Taken together, the Badu strike claim and the Garaha defence show the same northeast pattern: small forward bases remain exposed to night raids, while the military leans on air power and rapid base defence to blunt ISWAP and Boko Haram pressure across Borno and Adamawa.

What is confirmed and what is not

  • Stated by Operation Hadin Kai: night attack on FOB Garaha, Hong LGA, Adamawa, about 9:07 p.m. on 12 October 2026; attackers advanced on foot from the Lar axis; assault repelled; six terrorist corpses found; listed weapons and equipment recovered; troops wounded and under medical care.
  • Local official (LGA chairman), not in the military statement: attempt on a telecoms mast with surveillance cameras; forest guards and hunters involved; two shops burnt in Garaha; two soldiers with gunshot wounds; four bodies recovered on site (vs military six); one civilian killed and houses burnt in Lar as attackers withdrew.
  • Not independently verified: the full attacker strength, unit identity, and whether additional bodies were evacuated by the insurgents.
  • No response found: neither Boko Haram nor ISWAP had publicly commented on the Garaha clash at the time of writing.

Evidence note: Weapon and casualty figures attributed to the military come from Capt. Goni’s statement as carried by Nigerian newspapers. Differences between the military’s six bodies and the LGA chairman’s four recovered corpses are reported as a discrepancy, not resolved. This page will be updated at the same URL if the military names units or revises the toll.
