French shipbuilder Naval Group has unveiled SCX 26, a new concept warship aimed at high-intensity and hybrid naval combat, at EURONAVAL 2026 in Paris. The 170-metre, 8,000-tonne design combines more than 100 vertical launch silos, a rapid-fire electromagnetic gun, a 100 kW laser and a large aft mission bay for drones and helicopters. It is a concept study, not a funded programme.

Naval Group published the concept on 3 November 2026 as EURONAVAL opened at Paris Nord Villepinte (3–6 November). The company frames SCX 26 as a response to dispersed, unpredictable naval warfare marked by aerial, surface and underwater drones, electronic warfare, cyberattacks, and ballistic, hypersonic and asymmetric threats.

What Naval Group says SCX 26 is — and is not

Naval Group calls SCX 26 a concept ship: a forward-looking exercise that explores technologies, architectures and operational approaches for future naval forces, at both ship and fleet level. The company says a concept ship “does not necessarily [tie] to a future program”. No French Navy order, programme name, build schedule or cost has been disclosed.

Size, speed and crew

  • Length: 170 metres
  • Displacement: 8,000 tonnes
  • Speed: designed for 30 knots
  • Range: more than 8,000 nautical miles
  • Crew: optimised for 150 sailors, with 100 extra berths for senior officers and specialist personnel

Weapons and sensors (official wording)

According to the Naval Group release, the main missile fit comprises more than 100 VLS (Vertical Launching System) silos of various classes, plus an electromagnetic gun capable of rapid fire. Close-range protection combines two Rampart multipurpose modular launching systems and a 100 kW laser. The concept also carries remotely operated munitions and 360° remotely operated secondary artillery.

Sensors listed by the company include a UHF radar designed for ballistic missile defence, a comprehensive anti-submarine sonar suite and advanced electronic warfare capabilities. Naval Group has not disclosed which missiles would fill the silos, the electromagnetic gun’s calibre or rate of fire, or any cost or construction timeline.

Note: Some secondary press reports have cited a different VLS cell count. Defence Mena uses Naval Group’s official figure of more than 100 silos.

Two modules, a flex zone and a drone mission bay

The architecture centres on two integrated modules separated by a modular “flex zone” intended to take new operational capabilities during the ship’s life. Two masts and launchers distributed between bow and stern are presented as a way to improve segregation and redundancy in key weapon systems.

The aft section is built around a spacious mission bay for deploying, recovering and updating drones, with integrated lifting systems and a large-capacity elevator. Naval Group says the bay can load, maintain, launch and recover various drones and helicopters by mission — including intelligence, surveillance, electronic warfare, anti-submarine warfare and force protection.

AI support, human decisions

Naval Group stresses that artificial intelligence and autonomy are meant to enhance the crew, not replace it. Operational decision-making and responsibility, it says, remain with people. SCX 26 is described as an evolving “system of systems” that would fight as part of a wider force of ships, aircraft, drones and future naval combat systems.

Why it matters for Africa and MENA readers

EURONAVAL is a key showcase for naval suppliers that African and Gulf fleets already buy from or compete against. SCX 26 itself is not linked to any African or Middle Eastern programme. What it does signal is where a major European builder is pushing: denser VLS load-outs, directed-energy close defence, electromagnetic guns, and mothership-style drone bays. Those themes already show up in regional modernisation debates — from corvette and frigate buys to Red Sea and Gulf escort requirements — even when no SCX 26 order exists.
