Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says its air defences shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Strait of Hormuz early on Tuesday 20 October 2026, and calls it the 54th MQ-9 it has destroyed. The United States had not confirmed or denied the claim at the time of publication, and the IRGC released no wreckage images or location details. The most detailed public US-side tally, from the Congressional Research Service (CRS), counts 45 MQ-9s lost or damaged from all causes between 28 February and mid-September. Here is what each side has actually said.

What the IRGC claims

In a statement carried by state broadcaster IRIB and the Mehr news agency, the IRGC said the drone “belonging to the U.S. military was intercepted and destroyed in the skies over the Strait of Hormuz” early on Tuesday. It said the engagement used “a new, advanced air defense system” of the IRGC Aerospace Force, operating under Iran’s integrated air defence network. It did not name the system, give a time or position, or publish imagery.

The statement describes this as the 54th MQ-9 downed. The IRGC has not published a list of the earlier 53 or said when its count begins.

What the US side has said

We found no statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM) or the Pentagon on Tuesday’s claim. The fullest public accounting is the CRS report released in early October, which counted an estimated 81 US military aircraft and drones destroyed or damaged in the conflict with Iran from 28 February, when the US and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury, to mid-September. MQ-9 Reapers made up 45 of them, according to Stars and Stripes‘ reporting on the study.

That figure covers more than shoot-downs. CRS included aircraft hit by enemy or friendly fire, lost in mishaps in the combat zone, or destroyed on the ground, and said some damaged aircraft may have returned to service. It drew on Pentagon statements, congressional testimony and media reports, and called the count subject to revision. Asked about the report, CENTCOM said: “Nothing further to provide.”

Why the two numbers do not line up

  • Different windows. The CRS tally stops in mid-September. Any losses since then, including Tuesday’s if confirmed, are not in it.
  • Different definitions. CRS counts “lost or damaged” from all causes. The IRGC counts drones it says it destroyed.
  • No common baseline. The IRGC has not said whether its total includes incidents before the current war.

Even so, the IRGC’s 54 is higher than the only independent public figure, which already includes accidents and damage. Until CENTCOM comments or wreckage is shown, Tuesday’s shoot-down should be treated as an Iranian claim.

Why the MQ-9 keeps featuring in the Hormuz war

The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper is a long-endurance, medium-altitude drone used for surveillance and strike. Over the Strait of Hormuz it is a main source of persistent coverage of IRGC Navy boats, mine-laying activity and coastal missile sites. It flies relatively slowly and predictably, which makes it a regular target for ground-based air defences. The Washington Post reported in August that the US military had lost roughly a quarter of its Reaper fleet in the war.

The claim also comes amid a run of Iranian statements about the strait that have not been confirmed independently. Over the weekend, the IRGC Navy said several tankers had hit mines, while the shipping monitors JMIC and UKMTO called earlier claims unsubstantiated; we covered that in Iran’s Hormuz tanker-mine claims. On Sunday, parliament confirmed Mehrdad Akhlaghi Ketabchi as defence minister, and he warned that another US or Israeli “miscalculation” would bring a response.

What to watch

  • A CENTCOM or Pentagon statement confirming or denying the loss.
  • Any IRGC release of wreckage imagery or a named air defence system.
  • An updated CRS or Pentagon loss figure covering the period after mid-September.
